Life Is Not a Support-System for Art

I’m plugging through King’s On Writing, as promised. He is witty and sharp and descriptive in a practically perfect way.  But, it wasn’t until page 101 that my jaw dropped and I thanked God for this memoir.

…I’m going to tell you as much as I can about the job. As promised, it won’t take long.

It starts with this: put your desk in the corner, and every time you sit down there to write, remind yourself why it isn’t in the middle of the room. Life isn’t a support system for art. It’s the other way around.

  1. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen the Mary Poppins catchpphrase -practically perfect in every way- applied to Stephen King! But I have to agree wholeheartedly. That book accomplishes the impossible, it is both inspiring and practical.
